I've moved the old blog spot to the SPHEA site. I suppose I should have done that in the first place! Oh well. For those of you who don't know, The Single Parent Homeschooler began as an email newsletter in 2005. I started the project because I noticed a profound lack of support for single parent homeschoolers. Of course, we are still a homeschooling minority, (I used to think I was the only one in the world who was doing it) but then noticed that homeschooling support groups just didn't get it, or should I say understand the issues that "we" as a group confront. Most of homeschoolers are two-parent households, but more single parents are now beginning to teach their own.
My plans for this blog are to continue to assist and support single-parents that homeschool, or single-parents thinking about homeschooling. I will also address afterschooling, which is also a good option.
Now a little bit about me: I began homeschooling way back (uh oh I'm dating myself) when people kind of did it discreetly in secret, before it was actually "legal." I started with my son who was then 7 and in first grade. I was married at the time and then unfortunately went through a divorce about 4 years later. My children went to public school awhile, but I did pick up homeschooling again about 3 years later, graduating both my son and daughter from high school. I currently have a 7 year old daughter attending a charter school in our area, but will begin homeschooling her this fall. She is very excited and happy about it, and looking forward to learning more.
I'm due to finish my degree in psychology (June '14) and planning to continue on to obtain the Masters degree. Ultimately, I'd like to complete a doctorate in clinical psychology (neuropsych specialty). I am a freelance writer with about 8 years experience and 10 years previous experience in the nursing field. This is how I supported myself during the earlier homeschooling years. Now I mostly just write and consult.
I'm hoping that you will find the posts helpful. I will be moving some of the old posts over as well. Happy Reading!
